    All skill levels are welcome. You do not need to be a Shop member to take this course.

    The class introduces beginning students to the process of carving stone 
    with hand tools. Beginners start with alabaster or soapstone - both 
    fairly soft stones that can be easily carved. The instructor provides 
    tools for use during the class and assists throughout the process. More 
    advanced students are provided with a regularly scheduled opportunity to 
    work, get feedback from other artists, and a chance to both learn and 
    share the knowledge you've acquired. We have fun. 

    The class is very informal. The instructor works one-on-one with 
    students during the class as needed, and is readily available to answer 
    questions about anything that comes up. You dream it, we'll figure out 
    how to make it. 

    Stone carving is dusty. Come dressed to get dirty and wear closed-toed shoes.

    If you need a stone to start, you can buy one directly from the 
    instructor. Alternatively, you can go to Renaissance Stone in Oakland 
    and buy a stone of your choosing. Choose a piece of alabaster or 
    soapstone. We do not have the tools to be carving granite. 

    The twelve class sessions is sufficient for a diligent student to 
    complete a simple sculpture. Many take more than 12 class sessions. 
    You are more than welcome to sign up for this class as often as you 
    like. 

    Students may register and start their 12 sessions any time during the course; there is no need to begin or end at a particular date. 

    Single class sessions are available for $25 each at the instructor's discretion.

    The laser cutters are extremely powerful and versatile machines that can be used to cut and engrave complex shapes and patterns into a large variety of materials up to 1/4” thick, and some even thicker materials. Wood, many plastics, and some foams and composites may all be used with the laser cutters. 

    This class covers safe use of all laser cutters in San Jose—we have three different kinds in a variety of sizes! Using a design we have prepared, we will teach you how to cut, engrave, and etch using the laser cutter, as well as how to prepare a file on the various softwares that work with each type of laser cutter.

    Course length is 2 hours.

    Get started turning bowls and platters on the lathe in this wood turning class, and make a unique item for yourself or a friend. Bowl turning generally describes the use of a wood lathe to cut short material that has a large diameter, and typically produces bowls, plates, and often large hollow forms.

    You will learn about basic operation of the lathe and safety while turning, talk about tool selection and types of cut, then practice making your first few cuts before turning down your own design.

    This is an advanced class and is not part of the SBU class pack. Prerequisites to taking this class are Wood Turning 1 and Wood Turning 2: Spindles. 

    Class length is 3 hours. Materials and tools are provided, but feel free to bring in wood you are interested in working with if you have it!

    The Shopbot is a CNC (computer numeric control) router that allows the user to cut out a wide variety of 2D and 3D designs into wood, plastic, foam, and some composite materials. It can be used to repeatably create intricate parts with tight tolerances.

    In this class, we will show you how to safely operate the ShopBot and machine a small lidded box we have designed ahead of time. While softwares like Fusion 360, SolidWorks, and V-Carve can be used to generate part files and tool paths for the ShopBot, this class only covers use of the machine. Check online for design resources and be sure to ask a staff member if you have questions about your work!

    3D printers are an excellent tool for turning digital 3D art into a physical object, for prototyping parts, and exploring geometries and forms.  


    This class will teach you the basics necessary to safely operate and maintain the Go Big Genesis 8 3D printer in particular, and how to use the necessary softwares to transfer your 3D designs to this printer.

    The Go Big is a unique printer designed and built locally, with a huge build volume of 2'x2'x2'. It prints in PLA, and tends to be quicker than many other extrusion-based printers.

    Course length is 1 hour. Material is provided.

    In this advanced woodworking class, learn to make an heirloom-quality box customized to your own design intentions—it might be meant to hold jewelry, become a music box, or contain special memorabilia. By the end of the course, you will have hand-made a beautiful personalized object that would cost hundreds to purchase elsewhere. We will work with you to develop your ideas into a buildable design, then begin the process by milling down raw lumber. To add to both the function and aesthetic of your boxes, we will learn to work with the structure and grain of the wood, to incorporate shelf and drawer elements, and laser engrave the finished box.

    The class takes place in four sessions, beginning with milling. We will take boards of a variety of lumber including cedar, and after deciding on the design of each box, cut and dimension the necessary pieces. The second session will cover the process of making slight adjustments to your milled pieces and testing the assembly with a dry fit before gluing the pieces together to wait for the next session. In the third session we will begin by cleaning up edges and adding any remaining desired features to the glued box, then move on to finishing processes to improve the surface appearance of the wood. The fourth session will cover final assembly and fitting of any other elements such as hinges and drawers, then continue into the laser engraving time.

    While we will still briefly cover safety practices for the tools and machines used, please note this is an advanced class—having taken our introductory woodworking classes (or equivalent safety training) is a required prerequisite. If you are unsure whether or not you have completed the necessary prerequisites, call us to check.

    The course takes place Tuesday evenings; each session is 3 hours. Materials and tools are provided, but if you have wood you would prefer to work with, you are welcome to bring it in.

    The TRAK mill is a milling machine capable of operating in both manual and CNC modes to repeatably and efficiently produce complex parts in a variety of metals and plastics. This course is intended to teach some basics of machining theory and manual proficiency on the mill before introducing the CNC mode and writing a program. 

    Users will gain proficiency on both the K3 (pictured) and DPM mills, which have 2- and 3-axis CNC capabilities, respectively. We will start by learning to use the machine as a manual mill, then learn to program the CNC milling of a more complex part right in the control box as well as to load a saved or custom g-code program.

    Completing the course earns students use of the mills in manual mode. To continue using the mills in CNC mode, students will be given machine time outside of class to mill the part we learned to program. Returning the finished part to the instructor or staff earns the student continued access to the mills in CNC mode. 

    This class covers safety and basic operation of the machine in manual and CNC modes, including automatic feeds, working in absolute and incremental modes using the digital readout, setting tools and work coordinates in the controls, writing a simple program, adjusting offsets, and machining a simple part.

    Course length is 2 hours. Material and tools are provided.

These are heavier duty than a typical home machine, and are capable of working very quickly in light and medium weight fabrics, as well as some heavier materials.  Whether you're looking to learn a new skill or refresh an old one, we will help you gain confidence on the machines and start learning to develop your own goods.

    We will go over safety and basic use of the machine, loading and changing thread and needles, managing thread tension to achieve the best results, and material selection, then practice a few stitches to get a feel for the machine.

    Course length is 1.5 hours. Material and tools are provided.

    In this class you will learn to safely operate some of the more powerful shaping and dimensioning woodworking machines in the woodshop. These tools are often used for dimensioning raw lumber, for creating complex curvatures and profiles, and for smoothing and finishing large flat surfaces.

    This class covers the jointer, planer, table router, shaper, and drum sander.

    Course length is 2 hours.

    In this class you will learn to use the cutting and shaping tools most commonly needed when working with solid and sheet metal. Most of these tools are normally used on materials at least 0.125" thick, while the sheet metal tools are intended for thinner materials. These tools can be used with steel and aluminum.


    This class covers the horizontal band saw, abrasive chop saw, drill press, pedestal grinders, and disc sander, as well as the sheet metal brake, shear, roller, and corner notcher.

    In this class, the instructor will demonstrate several Tips and Tricks for using the Bandsaw while inspiring you to be safely creative in the use of a bandsaw. Several old and venerated techniques will be demonstrated as well as commonly used techniques, plus some updated tricks.

    This class is a prerequisite for upcoming bear carving and wood sculpture class(es), because you will learn how to use the bandsaw to rough out your carving.

    Some techniques are suitable for wood turners who can use the bandsaw to simplify and shortcut the turning process by creating better rough profiles before putting the work on the lathe.

    The class is oriented to the average woodworker, but is very suitable for novices as well. During the class you will use a couple of the tricks and techniques to make your own bandsawn box to take home and apply your choice of finishes.

    About the instructor: B. Clyde Beck has been learning and doing woodworking since he was 10 years old. In the 65 years since he has built houses, constructed cabinetry in the shop and on site, worked in finish carpentry, designed and built furniture, done some wood sculpture, and all along designed and made many useful items in wood. He has used most woodworking machines and tools old and modern, and the band saw is one of his favorite go-to machines.

    This class is designed for students 18 and up, 16 and up with a guardian in attendance.

    This class requires a minimum of 2 students. If the minimum is not met, you will be notified 24 hours before the class.
