    The TRAK mill is a milling machine capable of operating in both manual and CNC modes to repeatably and efficiently produce complex parts in a variety of metals and plastics. This course is intended to teach some basics of machining theory and manual proficiency on the mill before introducing the CNC mode and writing a program. 

    Users will gain proficiency on both the K3 (pictured) and DPM mills, which have 2- and 3-axis CNC capabilities, respectively. We will start by learning to use the machine as a manual mill, then learn to program the CNC milling of a more complex part right in the control box as well as to load a saved or custom g-code program.

    Completing the course earns students use of the mills in manual mode. To continue using the mills in CNC mode, students will be given machine time outside of class to mill the part we learned to program. Returning the finished part to the instructor or staff earns the student continued access to the mills in CNC mode. 

    This class covers safety and basic operation of the machine in manual and CNC modes, including automatic feeds, working in absolute and incremental modes using the digital readout, setting tools and work coordinates in the controls, writing a simple program, adjusting offsets, and machining a simple part.

    Course length is 2 hours. Material and tools are provided.
