Get started turning spindles on the lathe in this wood turning class, and make a unique item for yourself or a friend. Spindle turning usually refers to a woodturning method in which long stock is cut while supported “between centers” using both the headstock and tailstock of the lathe. Typical results of spindle turning include items like pepper grinders and table legs of all styles.
You will learn about basic operation of the lathe and safety while turning, talk about tool selection and types of cut, then practice making your first few cuts before turning down your own small design.
This is an advanced class and is not part of the SBU class pack. Prerequisite to taking this class is Wood Turning 1.
Class length is 3 hours. Materials and tools are provided, but feel free to bring wood you are interested in working with if you have it!
